Underwater Videographer Course
Welcome to my online underwater video course. Here you can improve your knowledge of underwater video way beyond what is taught in the PADI Underwater Videographer Specialty.
There are remarkably few sources of good advice about underwater video. Hopefully this course can help fill that void. Many aspiring shooters take the PADI Underwater Videographer Specialty but find themselves disappointed as the course is often taught by instructors who have limited experience in the field. The content of the course is OK, but is limited and gets outdated quickly. It is really only a duck dive into the ocean that is underwater videography.
I am by no means a world authority on many of the subjects I cover here, but after being more or less obsessed with underwater video for much of the last ten years, I have gained plenty of knowledge about the subject. I have owned 7 video cameras and shot extensively with 4 very different housings over a thousand and something dives in all sorts of conditions. I also have a bad habit of procrastinating on the Sony VegasLINK and WetpixelLINK video forums, both fantastic sources of well-informed advice.
Having found myself recently answering the same old underwater video questions over and over again, I decided to try and relay what I know in this online underwater videographer course. I hope there is useful information here for both total beginners and experienced underwater videographers, and that writing it can also cement my own knowledge.
The advice here is not totally impartial. Like all underwater videographers, I have come to favour certain equipment or techniques. Please do let me knowLINK if you disagree with my opinions or methods, or if you find factual errors with the content of the course. I plan to update and expand the content of the course as the field of underwater videography evolves and as my own knowledge of it deepens.
As an underwater videographer you face a unique challenge in recording and sharing the beauty (or otherwise) of the underwater world. Few other occupations demand mastery of so many diverse disciplines. Scuba diving proficiency, artistic creativity and technical knowhow all play important roles in the quality of your end product, and there is never ending scope for anyone to improve in all these aspects. I cannot imagine a more exciting and rewarding challenge.
