Scuba diving at Wori and Tiwoho near Manado. Although the Lembeh Strait offers the best muck diving around North Sulawesi, the area around Manado also has some excellent muck diving sites. Wori, named after the nearby village on the Sulawesi mainland, is an excellent muck diving destination and a short boat trip from Bunaken Island.
On a single dive in November 2006 while diving with Two Fish Divers I encountered all sorts of weird and wonderful underwater critters there including a school of striped eel catfish (Plotosus lineatus), a scorpionfish (Scorpaenopsis), a male ribbon eel (Rhinomuraena quaesita), a banded goby (Amblygobius phalaena), pink anemonefish (Amphiprion perideraion) and a juvenile bicolor parrotfish (Cetoscarus bicolor).
As a juvenile, the Graeffe's sea cucumber mimics the toxic nudibranch, Phyllidia varicosa, to repel predators. On this dive I saw both the nudibranch and the sea cucumber that mimics it in juxtaposition.
Many other species of nudibranch can be found here, including the "wart slug" Phyllidia ocellata, Glossodoris rufomarginata, and Doriprismatica atromarginata.
After Wori I dived at nearby Tiwoho where bigfin reef squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana) were laying their egg sacks amongst a beautiful reef of staghorn coral. I also shot chocolate chip starfish (Protoreaster nodosus), a school of scaly chromis (Chromis lepidolepis), a longnose hawkfish (Oxycirrhites typus) poised in wait, and a swaying school of rigid shrimpfish (Centriscus scutatus).
If you ever dive at Manado or Bunaken Island, I highly recommend a visit to these fabulous muck diving sites.
This video was shot in 1080-50i HDV with my Sony HVR-Z1P camera and is delivered here in 720p HD.
I also have a standard definition video of night diving at Tiwoho, shot a few months earlier.
